PROVE THEY ARE A CUT, AND COLOUR ABOVE THE REST
When it comes to creating exceptional hair colour and the hottest catwalk looks, a hairdresser from Matthew Paul in Burton-on-Trent has proved he is the best in the UK having made it through to the Grand Final of the L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy.
Matthew Fairbrother saw off stiff competition from twenty-five salons from across the North Western region during a thrilling evening of live hairdressing at Manchester Central. They had just thirty minutes to style a winning look under the brief ‘hair inspired by fashion’ and needed to create an image that reflected one of the key trends from the Autumn/Winter 09/10 catwalk collections.
Matthew explains the look that caught the judges eye and clinched him a place in the Grand Final; “My main inspiration came from Julien MacDonald’s Autumn/Winter 09 show. I wanted to pick a strong theme that would make an impact on the catwalk and decided to go for a classic rock chick with an edgy twist.”
Hundreds of the regions taste makers gathered to watch the competition in action making for an electrifying evening that celebrated hair inspired by fashion. In-keeping with the stylish ambience of the event, guests witnessed a stunning fashion show by London Fashion Week hot-ticket Jacob Kimmie featuring hair by the L’Oréal Professionnel iD Artist Team.
It was down to an esteemed panel of hairdresser judges to decide which of the teams would be continuing their journey in the competition. No easy task given the standard of this year’s entries as judge Sally Brooks explains; “The North Western region is historically a very strong area to judge and this year was no exception. We were impressed by the creativity that was presented on the competition floor with many team’s choosing bold style statements to illustrate their fashion interpretations.”
After a nail-biting wait, it was time for the winners to be announced, a moment that Matthew will never forget. “We’ve put so much work into this and really pulled together as a team dream. This is a massive achievement for the salon and it feels unbelievably good to have made it through to the Grand Final.”
With his place in the final line-up now guaranteed, it’s time for Matthew to show his style credentials as he heads to London on Monday 1st June to compete at the Grand Final. He will show his work alongside forty-two regional finalists from across the UK at a star-studded live catwalk show, to be held at Earl’s Court 2.
The L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy raises the business bar for competing salons and the demanding challenges of the journey will see the teams striving to win a photoshoot with style bible Vogue and the opportunity to be crowned Britain’s top colourist.
